About Us

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is today not only the oldest Polish brand and one of the oldest trademarks in the world, but also a dynamically developing enterprise, whose main objective is to preserve for future generations and make available to the public a monument to the history and culture of the Polish nation, a unique natural and technological world heritage site, and a place of worship. After the mining of the salt deposits ended in 1996, the Wieliczka Salt Mine had to develop other lines of business, and was transformed from a salt manufacturer to a service provider. A restructuring plan was developed for the mine, which provided for separating the excavation securing activities, financed from the state budget, from the rest of company operations.

The state-owned Wieliczka Salt Mine enterprise was to ensure the safeguarding and maintenance of the historic excavations as well as combating the mining threats and recycling the saline water, while the Wieliczka Salt Mine Tourist Route daughter company established in 1997 assumed the responsibility for the development and the operation of tourism activities.

In 2007, the company was commercialized and the state-owned Wieliczka Salt Mine enterprise was transformed into wholly-owned company of the State Treasury, whose main activity consisted in preserving the historical site, conducting mining operations including the final close-down of the Barycz mine and the non-historic part of the Wieliczka mine, and making the mine available for tourism purposes.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine Tourist Route, apart from tourism activities, offers trade and services activities, and organizes a few hundred events of various kinds each year. In 2003, the Underground Rehabilitation and Treatment Center was isolated from the Wieliczka Salt Mine to ensure the organization and development of treatment services.

Our mission consists in preserving for future generations, developing and offering state-of-the-art presentation of the historical, cultural, scientific, and technological monument and place of worship.
